Thursday Update from Golf Girl World

I'll be doing a regular "Thursday Update" from now on. It's just a quick update on what's going on behind the scenes at Golf Girl Media.

This has been SUCH a crazy week!

As an official member of the Golf Girl Media team, I’ve been doing everything sending off various emails to various people.... for various reasons, and working on ways to make Golf Girl Media, not only a company but... um, an empire? OK, maybe a tad bit of an overreach, but you get the picture.

I've also been managing some social media stuff, for example I launched the GolfGirlMedia Facebook page. Now (I’ve been told) I've got to help transform it into a beautiful, seductive, interactive place to connect... and exchange ideas... on some of golf's most fascinating people, beautiful places and unique products. The GolfGirl got on Facebook in the early days with a personal profile ...when that was the only option. Problem is, that format only allows 5,000 connections and as we ALL know, golf is much bigger than that. The GolfGirl's personal page is getting close to that number and the "Facebook police" are already telling us we can't add any more contacts. So this week we produced our new Page: GolfGirlMedia. So... if you indulge in Facebook please “like” us.

Oh... in addition to FB, I'm twittering (@GolfGirl_Junior), and exploring some of the other social media options flying around on the internet. I'll keep you posted on those explorations.

In other news: Golf Geeks rejoice! We're starting a new column at Golf Girl Media. We're calling it Golf Geek Weekly and we'll be reviewing the latest golf apps for iPhone, ipad, Blackberry and Android... including games, scorecards, guides and more. I'm crazy about apps BTW.

Finally, this week’s GolfGirlJunior poll was inspired by a suggestion from one of our awesome readers, Frank D, who hails from a mythical place called Ft. Liquordale, in sunny Florida: "Can a man enjoy dating a woman who plays golf better than he does?"

Drop your answers below or email them to me and we'll present some of the best on our BlogTalk Radio show next week, and share them on the aforementioned FB page.

Well, that's it for this week have a good weekend.

Of Princes & Ballgowns & Beautiful Ryder Cup Birdies

Team USA

Team Europe

They wore plumage of fine silk and frothy taffeta... in midnight black, icy white or one of several jewel tones.

The inelegant acronym that's so often used to describe them was forgotten, at least for this one night.

There were no WAGs at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium for the Ryder Cup's official function opening on Tuesday evening.  The wives and girlfriends were allowed, for this single enchanted soiree,  to simply be glamorous women... to be individuals and wear distinctive gowns of their won choosing.

Also present at the gala get-together was Prince Charles, heir apparent to the thrones of the Commonwealth realms, and an outspoken advocate for architecture (including... one might presume... golf course architecture) and for the conservation of historic buildings.

The golf action gets underway tomorrow, at which point the elegant European and American birdies will presumably fade into the background, dress in identical understatedly practical outfits and yield center stage to their talented husbands.

However at the festive opening function the women were clearly the stars.

Only Two Things - The Professional Athlete's Partner

Ryder Cup week has been underway for a couple days now and we're quickly getting to know an international cast of WAGs.

We saw them as they first set foot on Welsh soil... disembarking with their partners from the team's aircraft... and later, sitting primly in rows for a fashion show.  A classically posed group shot is already making the rounds.

There have already been numerous stories of impending clashes between the Captain's wives, and entire features on the most alluring WAG's .... features. And that's fine. Many of enjoy such stories, weather we'll admit it or not, we're genuinely interested in what these ladies are wearing, how they're reacting and

And that's where tonight's topic comes in. Have you ever heard of HABs? Do you ever remember reading any fluffy features about the husbands and boyfriends of female golfers? Or female athletes in any sport? Have you ever seen smiling male "partners" in perfectly posed group portraits? Not so much, right?

And that brings us to our subject: What exactly is the role of a professional athlete's partner and why is is so different for women and men? That's what we'll be talking about tonight on Only Two Things. You can join the conversation on-air by using our call-in number, which is: 917-889-9592. Or weigh in at the chat room or on Twitter... or just have a listen at Blog Talk Radio. Talk to you tonight.

I Tweet U Not - The Ryder Cup Twitter Rule

by Jordan Farr
Whether or not you think the newly-enacted Ryder Cup “no tweet law" belongs in the “Stupid Law Book” ... you should know it’s has been implemented for a reason.

What that reason is, I don’t think anyone quite knows for sure. However, what is clear is that some golfers believe it’s down right silly, unfair and quite... um... ignorable.

The European team’s ever-so-social Ian Poulter is officially the first of the Ryder Cup players to conveniently overlook the no tweeting law. And he did so with the utmost respect for everyone’s privacy.

Oh, I would list all of the player’s twitter handles here, but I don't think their Captains want you distracting them.

BTW - I spent yesterday playing golf with GolfGirl... and I believe I spotted her Tweeting on several occasions.

Monday Eclectic - A weekly Collection of Notable Links

Interesting, under-reported golf stories... or well-written renderings of the most talked about events. ~ Innovative and unusual products, provocative people, inviting places. ~ That’s Monday Eclectic.

At Lisa Horn's awesome Fox Sports Tweet Tweet a sartorially sensitive exchange between @stewartcink, @IanJamesPoulter and @PaulAzinger was revealed. It seems to indicate that a certain lavender sweater may be showing up on eBay before the action starts at Celtic Manor.

Speaking of upcoming events at Celtic Manor, BBC News reports that in anticipation a Ryder-related rise in demand for ...um, erotic services... Newport’s forces-of-order are being... “pragmatic”... about certain activities related to the sale of sex... in spite of the pesky “Victorian moral code”.

The “vice girls” are doing some creative marketing as well according to Wales Online... and they don’t have any issues with using a certain fallen golfer in their advertising.

French fashion house Lacoste... an iconic golf sponsor, and one of my all time favorite brands... recently created a futuristic concept car with Citroën for the Paris Motor Show... and guess what? It’s quite reminiscent of... a golf cart. It’s adorable!

I got an email from Jordan @GolfGirl_Junior on Saturday that had this as the subject \(*.*)/ Yay Ryo \(*.*)/ It was her way of informing me of Ryo Ishikawa’s awesome ace at the Panasonic Open.

Oh, and since it’s just days away, one final Ryder-related story from MIRROR.CO.UK : It seems one man’s “Dear Jack” letter... led him to a career in golf course design. He’s now part of Spain’s bid for the 2018 Ryder Cup.

Camilo Villegas, Nudity & The Messed-up Game of Golf

.
by Jordan Farr

Holy Nakedness... a gentleman golfer posing nude!?!

Camilo Villegas, one of the World’s top golfers and a perennial Golf Girl favorite, will be appearing in the upcoming Body Issue of ESPN Magazine in the buff... nekkid, as they say in today’s lingo ~ And here’s the thing: no one’s really making that big a deal of it.

At first this surprised me, you see, I’m still getting to know golf and its stars... the personalities and past histories. I thought this was a stretch, I mean golf has such a conservative reputation, I was thinking jeez, what is this... a “golfer gone rogue” or something?

Well, as it turns out... not so much. I quickly found out, there was a precedent... Mr. Villegas isn’t the only golfer who’s posed nude, three LPGA players posed for the issue last year, including Christina Kim, another Golf Girl favorite. So far, the reception Spiderman’s gotten has been mild compared to the one that greeted Ms. Kim and her LPGA colleagues when they hoped onto a golf cart in the altogether last year.

Now, Mr. Villegas has been a fitness model for a while, and that’s probably part of why he wanted to be in the issue... after all, he offered to do it. And though he's a stellar golfer he admits it's always a battle. “Golf is a messed-up game." he stated, adding that "When you feel you’ve figured it out is when you’re going to struggle.”

But Camilo is fun loving and even makes jokes on the green. In the NYT article yesterday, he told a story of when two of his friends showed up late for one his tournaments, once they finally arrived he got not one, but TWO birdies! At which point he told them, “Why didn’t you get here earlier?”

Regarding the risque pictorial spread, the Colombian heart-throb declared with a smile, “It was a very interesting shoot”

So, What do you all of you think of these new-style golfers -- younger and more open? Is this good or bad for the game? Personally, I think it is great... But then I may a bit biased.

Molinari - Rocca - Colmar : The Elegance of Italian Golf

Earlier this year Edoardo Molinari said that Colmar was "...a brand in sync with his personality and tastes".

He's a global ambassador for the iconic Italian apparel company and is often one of the best dressed golfers on the course. ~ For 80 years,  the company has been well known for its golf apparel...  ski jackets and snow suits as well.

The brand was actually launched in 1923, when Mario Columbo decided to build the first factory.  Nowadays the golf line is being worn not only by Eduardo but also by Molinari role model Constantino Rocco.

A friend sent me the video in anticipation of the upcoming Ryder Club, where as you surely know, Edoardo will be playing... along with his brother... and Signor Rocca will be cheering them on.

"Golf Girl Junior" - Presenting Jordan Farr

As you may have noticed, there's lots going on in Golf Girl World these days. So much so that it's become tough to keep up! Which is quite frustrating.

To that end, I want to introduce you to Jordan... or Golf Girl Junior, as she's been calling herself... who from this point forward will be assisting me here at Golf Girl Media. As such she'll be making regular appearances on this blog and will also be a regular on "Only Two Things".

She officially started at the beginning of the week, and barring a couple of major mess ups minor mishaps, I've been pleasantly surprised at how imaginative and productive she's been. To the extent that I suggested she write her own Thursday column which she'll begin this week. So, without futher ado, here she is:

Hi! My name is Jordan, I’m going to be working with Patricia at Golf Girl Media as her assistant/intern/idea bouncer... Yeh, you get the idea!

I am delighted to be involved with Golf Girl Media and I’m really looking forward to working with Patricia on a wide variety of projects. I’m also looking forward to getting to know you... the Golf Girl readers/watchers/listeners.

I've graduated from mini golf, honed my swing at the driving range, and taken my game onto the golf course now I'll be working my shots and my scores while venturing into the golf media sphere. Part of that will be a weekly post, every Thursday, where I'll talk about the lates golf news topics, conduct a fun weekly poll, and dispense some insider information on what’s taking place behind the scenes here at GGM... and what we’ve got in the proverbial pipeline as regards future ideas and prospective projects.

Now that I’m a part of the Golf Girl Media Inc. community, I assume you want a bit more info on who I am:

I am currently working toward my Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education. I love working with kids and hope to work for a golf camp or junior program in the future. From reading Golf Girl’s Diary (and other golf blogs) I’ve begun to discover the unique nature of this game... and see how it can instill some great qualities in "little ones". So yeh, I’d love to help get a young generation into the sport of Golf... once I improve my game!

Additionally, I love exploring new things and researching on the Internet. When I am not doing that you can find me rollerblading, swimming, or dancing.

OK... this is the part I need help with readers! I’d love to hear some of your ideas on any topics that you’d like me to write about in the weeks to come. Leave me a note in the comments section... or shoot me an email at jordan@golfgirlmedia.com.

Before I depart, I’ve got my first poll question for you... I actually presented it on last night’s show but ... um ... unfortunately I had my mic way down low so it was barely audible (I think I almost got fired for that one) anyways, here it is:

"The latest season of the popular show DANCING WITH THE STARS began this week. There have been quite a few athletes on in the past, NFL and NBA stars... swimmers, snowboarders, etc, but never a golfer. So... WHICH GOLFER WOULD GET YOU HOOKED ON DANCING WITH THE STARS?" ... It can be a male or a female but... I suggest you think beyond Tiger Woods ;-)

I’ll announce the results next week on “Only Two Things”. Catch the show live on Blog Talk Radio every Wednesday evening at 9:30 PM ET.

That's all for now... Golf Girl Jr. signing off.

Only Two Things - The World of a Beverage Cart Girl

On a warm summer day, when you've got a couple of hours of golf ahead of you, there's no sight more welcome than the beverage cart.

As it pulls up to the tee... with an attractive young lady at the wheel... golfers tend to smile. The prospect of an icy brew and a bit of lighthearted banter is always inspiring.

But what's life really like for these peppy purveyors of on-course refreshment... and who exactly are they? One hears so many things. Are they the sweet, always-accommodating, golf goddesses, with a passion for the game and a deep respect for those who play it... or the modern, money-motivated pretenders, clueless about golf and disdainful of their sometimes effusive customers?

For the inside story, tune in tonight to "Only Two Things". ~ A special guest will be joining me for the show... and I do believe she'll be able to enlighten us on the cart girl lifestyle.

Liza Churchill describes herself as a "proud former beverage cart girl"... and with her long blonde hair and quick smile, one can easily imagine her gliding along the fairways in search of thirsty golfers.

Nowadays Liza is a respected golf media producer. She's got an amazing golf radio show that airs weekly on 95.5 WATD, one of the one of the most respected and honored stations in the state of Massachusetts... and her blog Goldie Bounce Golf, features video interviews with top golf personalities, reviews of new and unique golf products and personal anecdotes about the life of a golf reporter. It's one of most entertaining golf-reads on the Internet.

Liza will with me tonight at 9:30PM ET on "Only Two Things" to talk about her adventures as a beverage cart girl and her experiences in golf media.

You can join the conversation on-air by using our call-in number, which is: 917-889-9592. Or weigh in at the chat room or on Twitter... or just have a listen at Blog Talk Radio. Talk to you tonight.

Swashbuckling Laura Davies & World Golf Hall of Fame

Like Arnold Palmer, Seve Ballesteros and Chi Chi Rodriguez, Laura Davies has a style that some have described as swashbuckling.

Flamboyant, adventurous, swaggering ...at risk of sounding sexist, it's not a style one normally associates with ladies.

But this lady is is a golf icon and without a doubt, the most accomplished English female golfer of modern times. That she's got a passion for football... and Ferarris... sets her apart even more.

I wrote about her a couple of weeks ago when she won the UNIQUA Open in Austria. There she became the oldest female player to win a professional tournament. On any tour, ever.

Well that record was quickly broken, because in Spain this past weekend at the Open de España, Davies again emerged victorious, earning her 76th career victory... and breaking her own two week old record.

For many the question is: why isn't Laura Davies eligible for World Golf Hall of Fame yet? She's two LPGA wins... or one LPGA major win... away from getting in, and has been for almost a decade. And therein lies the issue. Though she's been a consistent winner in Europe and Asia, her last LPGA victory came in 2001.

So considering the increasingly global nature of golf... and Laura Davies' accumulation of wins in prestigious tournaments with top fields... it seems like some changes might be in order in the way points are counted.

In the meantime here's the swashbuckling Ms.D a couple of days ago in Spain.

Monday Eclectic - Weekly Collection of Notable Links

Interesting, under-reported golf stories or well-written renderings of the most talked about events.

Innovative or unusual products... provocative people... inviting places. Once a week..or so, I'll link you up with my discoveries, here at Tuesday Saturday Monday Eclectic.

In case you didn't know it... because I sure didn't... irons can be really, really pretty. These, by Dbot5, certainly qualify.

Boorish guests at a UK golf course tore up the turf and trampled the greens.

Do you know what this stylish looking golf item is? Hint: it goes really well with an orange bikini.

Lot's of guys take golf trips to Ireland. Now ladies can take their own awesome trip with Red Tee. That tip comes via GolfGurls, which is itself a great resource for women golfers.

A Busy Fall Week for LPGA Star Cristie Kerr

As green leaves turn gold and days grow shorter, summer is a fast-fading memory in and around New York City.

However despite the tinge of regret that inevitably marks the season's end, a New York fall is always something to look forward to, as it inevitably brings with it a delightful, multi-hued foliage display and a new series of cultural events, festivals and museum shows. ~ September can be a busy month in NY and it certainly has been for LPGA Champion and part-time Gotham resident Cristie Kerr.

This past Wednesday there was the official ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Cristie Kerr Women’s Health Center at Jersey City Medical Center. The facility is state-of-the-art, and houses digital mammography machines and a unique breast MRI. Cristie helps fund the center through her Birdies For Breast Cancer charity, allowing both insured and uninsured patients to be able to receive services.

Later that afternoon Cristie joined LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan and a number of other LPGA players for a sponsor's summit.

The gathering took place at Manhattan's Hard Rock Cafe and was set up to present the business of the LPGA and the core values of the organization, encouraging prospective sponsors to get involved and take advantage of the sponsorship opportunities with the LPGA.

Then just yesterday was the annual Cristie Kerr Birdies for Breast Cancer Celebrity Golf Classic an event that raises funds the new Women's Health Center. It took place in the shadow of the statue of Liberty, at the dynamic Liberty National Golf Course.

LPGA players Natalie Gulbis, Morgan Pressel, Amanda Blumenherst, Jimin Kang, Michelle McGann, Kelli Kuehne and Hee Young Park participated as dis Boston Celtics star Ray Allen, former NY Mets catcher Mike Piazza, sportscaster Dan Hicks, Gossip Girl star Matthew Settle and PGA Tour winner Curtis Strange. There was the golf tournament and a competitive poker match. At the cocktail party... Cristie presented Curvature, her own wine label.

There's no LPGA tournament this weekend... the next one being is the Navistar Classic, that'll take place in Prattsvile AL... following that is the CVS/pharmacy LPGA Challenge in Danville, CA. Then Cristie's off to Malaysia for the Sime Darby.

From the looks of things Cristie won't be slowing down as the seasons change.

お誕生日おめでとうございます 石川 遼

"Happy birthday, Ryo-san :D"

"I so love you Ryo ~ ♥"

"かわいい happy birthday *<:-P"

"Happy Birthday!! ずっと応援してます!! I love your smile(^^)"

"I love everything about you Ryo and you're so handsome! I hope to see you one day, cause you make me scream whenever I see you, I LOVE YOU!!!! =DDDDDDD"

"I love your trousers! youre awesome!"

"Happy Birthday to you ♪♫•*¨*•.¸¸♥ ¸¸.•*¨*•♫♪ Happy Birthday to you ♪♫•*¨*•.¸¸♥ ¸¸.•*¨*•♫♪ Happy Birthday ♪♫•*¨*•.¸¸♥ ¸¸.•*¨*•♫♪ Dear Ryo ♥ ♥ ♥ Happy Birthday to you ♪♫•*¨*•.¸¸♥ ¸¸.•*¨*•♫♪ and many more ♪♫•*¨*...•.¸¸♥ ¸¸.•*¨*•♫♪...♪♫•*¨*•.¸¸♥ ¸¸.•*¨*•♫♪...♥ ♫♪...♪♫ Its your special day, so don’t forget the SMILES!!!!"

Such are the birthday greetings that appear on your facebook page when you're sweet and whimsical... and Japan's top-ranked professional golfer. ~ Then there was this:

"おめでとぉ(*´∀`*) Happy Birthday"!! r u 20?"

No, not yet. Ryo Ishikawa turns 19 today... which is hard to believe when you consider how much he's accomplished. True, Ryo started to rack up the records early:

2007 - became the youngest winner on the men's Japan Golf Tour at 15 (Munsingwear Open KSB Cup)

2008 - bacame the youngest player ever to reach the top 100 of the Official World Golf Rankings

2009 - bacame the youngest player ever to reach the top 50 of the Official World Golf Rankings

2010 - carded the lowest score ever on any major golf tour, a 58, at The Crowns a Japan Golf Tour event.

Those are just a few of the precocious prizes the bashful prince has claimed in less than two decades on earth. As one fan said:

"Happy Birthday Ryo!!! Hope you have a great year!!!"

Only Two Things - The Female Sports Scribe's Plight

It's the water cooler topic du jour" ...and a great subject for today's show.

It's being called the "Ines Sainz situation" by some, Ines Sainz being the little known NFL sideline reporter who's found herself at the center of a Media Maelstrom after an incident on Saturday involving several NY Jets, a pair of skin-tight jeans, and some stereotypically boorish behavior.

The basic situation not new: a female sports journalist is subjected to lewd/lascivious/demeaning remarks by the players she's covering. It can happen on the field or in the locker room, and there are myriad variations, but what often follows is scrutiny and criticism of the reporter herself. And that certainly happened this time around.

However, the Ines Sainz story is not quite as formulaic as it initially seemed. This particular version of the "Female Sports Scribe's Plight" appears to have as much to do with the issues sports media is trying to work out with itself... as it does with any one journalist's brush with locker room lasciviousness.

From watching several of the Sainz interviews yesterday I was left with distinct impression that this incident may well not have ever even come to light had other journalists not gotten involved.

As Ms. Sainz tells it, she was doing her job on Saturday, without much regard for the player's loutish behavior. She admits to being aware of the catcalls, whistling and remarks... and realizing they were being directed at her.... but maintains that she had tuned them out and was going on with her business, waiting to interview quarterback Mark Sanchez, when a fellow reporter approached her and "apologized" for the frat-boy behavior that was being directed at her, insisting it was "unacceptable" and "not OK". Only then did the incident become an issue.

From what I understand, it was at that point that Sainz tweeted that she was “dying of embarrassment” and "averting her eyes" while waiting for Sanchez to arrive. Apparently he did and the actual interview went off without a hitch, because the reporter then tweeted "mission accomplished great interview"

Then a bit later she tweeted, "some media people are saying I was dressed inappropriately for the Jets locker room". She included a photo of the outfit she was wearing... and it was glaringly easy to see why traditional sports journalists might call it inappropriate.

Ultimately, what struck me was that Ines Sainz seemed more uncomfortable with the reactions of some of her fellow journalists ... and some of those fellow journalists seemed more uncomfortable with her particular style... than anyone really was with the sophomoric antics of a couple of NY Jets.

Once again it brings to light the fact that the very nature of sports media has changed... drastically... and many in the business, as well as many fans, are currently grappling with those changes.

In today's environment athletes and sports teams... not to mention their sponsors... want/need to get maximum exposure and to that end, award press credentials to a wide variety of media outlets

To me, this case is a picture perfect example of "INFOtainment" bumping up against "traditional journalism".

They're two very different forms of media... with different standards of dress and behavior... that suddenly find themselves sharing the same space. Nowadays they routinely vye for the same interviews and compete for the same eyeballs. Tensions and resentments are inevitable. I believe that's precisely what happened here.

As far as Ines Sainez is concerned, within 24 hours reports of the incident in the locker room had found their way to the The Association for Women in Sports Media... presumably communicated by a concerned fellow journalist... and on Sunday morning Sainez received a personal apology from the owner of the New York Jets. She thanked him and has spent most of the past 48 hours on news and entertainment shows confirming that she's "put the whole thing behind her".

The NFL, for their part, has launched an investigation into the reports of inappropriate behavior and the incident has become a referendum on issues like: "what is appropriate attire for a female sports reporter" and should journalists (male and female) be allowed in sports locker rooms at all". Some of the opinions and observations that have been voiced contain elements that are a tad bit disturbing, such as bombastic, blowhard Rush Limbaugh's use of the words "Bubblicious" "Bootylicious" to describe Ms. Sainz, and the Washington Redskins' Clinton Portis' rambling statements about how ..."You know, somebody got to spark her interest, or she's going to want somebody. I don't know what kind of woman won't, if you get to go and look at 53 men's ..."

So there's our topic, the so-called "Ines Sainz situation"

It's a big one... with lots of moving parts and I'd love to hear what you think about it. We'll be discussing it tonight from 9:30 - 10:30PM ET on "Only Two Things". You can weigh in on-air by using call-in number 917-889-9592. Or join the conversation in the chat room or on Twitter... or just listen in at Blog Talk Radio Talk to you tonight.

I'll Be Talkin Golf Today... at TalkinGolf Radio

TalkinGolf is a multi-faceted internet golf radio station founded and run by Rod Morri, a highly engaging, ultra-energetic Sidney, Australia-based golf writer.

Rod covers all kinds of golf stories from all over the world... and always keeps it interesting.

I'll be on with Rod today, Tuesday, at 5:00PM ET and we'll be talking about the fun side of golf. Listen in at TalkinGolf.com or at the TalkinGolf channel on BlogTalkRadio

These Days No One's as Awesome as Rafael Nadal

For now, I think it's safe to say that Rafa is untouchable in his awesomeness.

For one thing he just won his first U.S. Open and at the same time completed a career Grand Slam. And many feel that at only 24, he's on his way to becoming the best of all time.

As I wrote just a few days ago he also plays golf... plays it well too. He played with Fred Couples a few months ago and the easy-going Masters Champion said he was struck by the Spaniard's competitive nature... and mentioned his simplicity and kindness, saying “He is just such a decent kid, who is very humble as well as immensely talented...”

Finally there's that music video he made recently with colombian singer... and golfer... Shakira. It happens to be the sexiest music video of all time. Bar none... that I know of. ~ So, I rest my case: These Days no one's as awesome as Raphael Nadal.

Ryder Cup Aesthetic - Lisa Pavin vs Tommy Hilfiger

Normally we'd be expecting to see red at the upcoming Ryder Cup.

Along with white and blue, the patriotic color pallet has always been considered de rigueur, with sometimes dubious results.

According to what's been revealed thus far however, the 2010 team will be sporting a variety of looks... largely retro-inspired... and they'll be rather light on the red, white and blue.

The 2010 collection was presented last week by US team captain Corey Pavin and his ebullient wife Lisa who spent the last two years working with designers to come up with the 2010 collection.

Few additional details were revealed but we did find out there'll be a trophy sweater, which is a bit worrisome as trophy sweaters are... by their very nature... tricky. Any time a sweater has an image woven into it... or otherwise adhered to it... the look can veer perilously close to that of the Ugly Christmas Sweater. So let's just hope we don't go there.

For Sunday it's apparently going to be black-on-black which should work everyone... as long as the accessories don't get out of hand.

The thing I found most disconcerting however was the sweater pictured in the one image released from the showing last week. Described as a "cornflower" colored cardigan, it appears in the photo (above) to be distinctly lavender. Which begs the question: when did "cornflower" stop being blue? According to the Crayola Crayon Color Chronology it still is, and that's what I'm hoping because that bright red patch on the left breast categorically clashes with the lavender sweater. Doesn't it?

And that brings me back to red white and blue... or more specifically lack there of. You see according to The Captainess, "Because there is not an abundance of these colors, each golf outfit features a patch with the Ryder Cup Trophy prominently displayed on the front left breast and the American flag patch on the back collar."
That left me wondering if the patches weren't added as an afterthought when the outfits were deemed "not patriotic enough". But perhaps the sweater just looks lavender in the photo or... just as likely... perhaps I'm the only one bothered by it.

It's just that this is fashion week and I was at Lincoln Center last night for the Tommy Hilfiger show. He's calling 2011 Spring/Summer the "Twisted Country Club" collection. It featured ample amounts of red, white and blue and if you can get past the leggy models in tiny skirts and cropped tops you might see what I saw: The perfect inspiration for a patriotically preppy Ryder Cup Collection.

Be that as it may, the "select group of golf fashion writers" who actually saw last week's presentation by the Pavins was uniformly impressed. In fact "super impressed" the way Khaki Crusader's Sean Hotchkiss described it, with his partner Annmarie Dodd adding that "Every man on the team is going to look handsome at every turn." Veteran golf fashion expert and Golf Digest Fashion Director Marty Hackel, even went so far as to declare that the 2010 styles were, "...the best collection of Ryder Cup apparel. Period." So I don't think there's anything to worry about.

Besides, there is in fact a collection of Tommy Hilfiger Ryder Cup wear that's available to the public and available at the online at... The Official European Ryder Cup shop.

Summer's Over... But The Birdie Sisters Play On

The Birdie Sisters had an ultra-busy summer; working hard on their games while competing in tournaments all over the country. And though school is back in session, golf goes on for Myah and Erica Jackson.

In fact, over the weekend they participated in "The Legend Tour" a Ted Rhodes charity event benefiting Local Junior Golf Programs and a Ted Rhodes Scholarship to the HBCU’S golf programs. It was a 36 hole event open to all, and included a Putting Contest, a Skins Contest and a Hole in One Contests among lots of other activities, and from the looks of the photos on their new Facebook fan page, an awesome time was had by all.

You'll also want to check out the Birdie Sister's website for details of their non-stop season, including posts on their media and tournament appearances... and lot's of lots of new photos. I'm sure you'll be impressed and inspired... which is nothing new when it comes to Myah and Erica Jackson.

Interesting, under-reported golf stories or well-written renderings of the most talked about events.

The Links at Terranea - An Extraordinary 9-hole par 3

When talk turns to "growing the game of golf" ...as it frequently does these days in golf media circles... one of the most often suggested initiatives is the development... and promotion... of shorter layouts.

Taking into consideration that cost, time and difficulty are the three most frequently cited factors in the decision to give up the game... or play fewer rounds... you'd think there'd be a major movement towards 9-hole courses and par 3 layouts, which would presumably address those issues. However, the past couple of years have actually seen shorter courses close at a higher rate than "regulation length" tracks.

So why are shorter courses not thriving when they seem to present an ideal solution to the main "issues" many have with the game of golf? There are myriad reasons, but the most common seem to be the perception that shorter courses and par-3 layouts tend to be designed cheaply for beginners and juniors and are generally uninteresting and poorly maintained.

Though that may have been the case in the past, a gradual shift is taking place as more quality par-3 courses are beginning to appear on the golf landscape.

The breathtaking Links at Terranea is certainly one of the finest. With a stunning Pacific coast layout on the Palos Verdes Peninsula the dramatic 9-hole par 3 is actually "a collection of 9 championship-caliber par-3 holes, masterfully routed and integrated with each other and the natural surroundings."

The course totals approximately 1,239 yards from the back tees, with a par of 27. It's a walking course in a magnificent setting that's sure to delight both beginners and highly competitive golfers. In addition to the artful bunkering and the wide range of classic strategic elements, such distractions the whales that frolic just off the coast can sometimes come into play. A round can be played in and the cost

Not surprisingly the Links at Terranea was voted Golf Inc. 2009 Development of the Year and cited as one of the Best New Courses of 2009 by LINKS Magazine.

I get the distinct feeling it could change some of those perceptions about par three courses pretty quickly.

Only Two Things - Of Tiger Woods & Ryder Cup Wives

Choosing this week's topic was a classic no-brainer.

Yesterday morning's announcement that the world's number one golfer would be on Captain Corey Pavin's US Ryder Cup team, launched into high gear the feigned indignation... not to mention the myriad jokes about resentful wives... that have been circulating since early summer.

For weeks now in golf forums and on message boards, there's been lively discussion about the US Ryder Cup wives and how they might react to a Tiger on the team. I'm not kidding. Quite a few golf scribes and tons of commenters have been weighing in on this, um... weighty issue. And from the standpoint of a female golf observer, it's been funny/disturbing to watch.

On Golf Channel's "24/7 Tiger" board, this question came up a couple of weeks ago:

"Do the Ryder Cup Wives want Tiger on the team?"
...it elicited 75 comments and one of the first was:

"Ok, here is a real life test for you... you and your wife are best friends with another couple... you find out that Bob has been having multiple affairs and now they are getting divorced... Are you still friends with both? ...Which one do you think your wife will want to see in the future? ...Think she will welcome Bob's newest teenage queen of the week over for dinner? ...This happens all the time. ...If you go to tour events, you will see the wives in packs following their guys... they are easy to spot. or hear. listen for the clinking of all the jewelry and the fact they are all wearing makeup and perfume vs the regular female fan."

Now first of all, who says regular female fans don't wear makeup and perfume... and lots of clinky jewelery??? But that's beside the point. The comments on that comment started pouring in, and many of them went something like this:

"Ok, here's a real answer for you... I'm the man of my household, if I choose to have any of my friend over, no matter what their situation is, then that's what I'll do....If my wife doesn't agree with it then that will be her issue. I don't have to check with her"

Then of course, there were variations on the theme, like this:

No!.....It would go something like this... Hey woman, I'm going out with Tiger, and if you don't like it you can hit the bricks... You do know that I made two million dollars last year, don't you? Then i would hear...Ok my king, go right ahead....have a good time. I'll conclude with, I'll be back before sunrise."

Additional commenters pondered the possibility that Tiger might bring along a "dubious" date... and explored the "awkward" logistics of seating a solo Tiger at Ryder Cup dinners:

"The wives do a lot of stuff together, charity, etc... Think they want him around reminding them of how easy it is for hubby to mess around on the road? ...What if Tiger shows up with a new hired escort? ...Think she will fit in?... Or will he show up alone...what table is he going to sit at?"

Still others addressed the impact "huffy wives" might have on the team's focus:

"Has anyone here ever argued with your spouse and tried to go to work the next day as if nothing happened? It tends to be rather ineffective. I say this because I think some of the wives would get huffy with their husbands about it and that argumentative setting would be a distraction."

So yes. While some might say the wives don't matter, other clearly feel they do, and it seems that quite a few men have convinced themselves that the Ryder Cup wives react like "women scorned", greeting Tiger with open hostility and hassling their husbands just for being on the same team with him. ~ "Real journalists" were weighing in as well. Golf.com's PGA Tour Confidential touched on the topic in their round table on Pavin's Picks:

Senior editor Mike Walker suggests that, "There won't be problems with the other wives or nonsense like that..." but executive editor Charlie Hanger, countered: "...I'm not so sure that the wives' opinions of Tiger won't have an impact. Will any wives really be happy to see their hubbys palling around with the great philanderer, and will any of them want to sit next to him at the team dinners?" ~ A bit of puerile pondering ensued regarding who'd be Tiger's date at the Ryder galas.

And the thing is, from the early days of the Tiger Woods scandal, this is the narrative many male golf scribes have been pushing, "women... particularly married/attached women... all over the world are very angry with Tiger. They've been highly insulted by his behavior and never want to seem him play golf again" plus... "they feel quite sure their husbands/boyfriends will be influenced by Tiger's reported philandering."

Meanwhile, very few (like, two) of the countless women I've spoken to on the subject harbor any of those feelings. And I'd venture to guess it's the same with the Ryder Cup wives. I'm pretty sure the wives will be just fine with Tiger... and I don't think any of them will object to being seated next to him either. Solo or with date.

What to you think? When it comes to Tiger, are women in fact, collectively "scorned"... or is that just a storyline created by guys? ...And either way, will it have an effect on the Ryder Cup wives...or their husbands?

That's what we'll be talking about tonight on "Only Two Things". We'll be broadcasting from 9:30 - 10:30PM ET. And you can weigh in on-air by using call-in number 917-889-9592. Or join the conversation in the chat room or on Twitter... or just listen at BlogTalkRadio. Talk to you tonight.

Rafa Nadal: Sexy Spanish Golf Guy Also Plays Tennis

Yes, he does play tennis. Quite well too, in fact he's currently No. 1 in the world. However, this is a golf blog so that's what we're focusing on here. You see, Rafa plays golf too. Often with fellow SSGG Sergio Garcia.

Señor Nadal is a regular at the El Castelló Masters ProAm, which Sergio hosts in his home town. Both golf and tennis fans come out en masse for the event, particularly female fans, who sometimes get a bit carried away... with the golf action.

Right now Rafael Nadal is in New York for the US Open where he's hoping to win the event for the first time and complete a career grand slam. In the meantime he been doing some fun things in Gotham. Like the Nike Prime Time Knockout where he played a match with gorgeous SI swimsuit model Bar Refaeli.

But again... back to golf, and here's the thing: the September edition of CNN International's excellent Open Court features an interview with the reigning W#1 of tennis... that takes place over a round of golf. And Rafa reveals a lot. Like that he loves Broadway musicals... and fishing. He also talks about his obsession with soccer stats and his feelings about the media.

The show airs on CNN International Thursday September 9th at 1230 and 1730 BST; Saturday September 11th at 0730 and 2100 BST; Sunday September 12th at 0430, 0830 and 1600 BST; Monday September 13th at 0230 BST. I realize many in the US don't get CNN International but it's well worth it to check with your cable company... you may even want to lobby them to carry it if they don't. Anyway here's a sneak peek at the upcoming show.

MAJ, Molinari, Manassero - The Sexiest Golf Video Ever

A Slow Week at the Omega European Masters is a four minute video brought to you by the European Tour... and as you will see, it takes SFW golf porn to a whole new level.

I fully realize that "sexy"... more than most things in life... is subjective. However, in this particular case I'm quite sure most will agree with my assessment.

After all, the leading man in this elegant court métrage is the only golfer I know of to be described as "resembling a porn star"... albeit a retired one. And his co-stars are both Italian. So OK, enough said about the cast.

The setting is nothing short of spectacular. It's filmed entirely on location at Switzerland's Golf-Club Crans-sur-Sierre ...against a breathtaking backdrop of snow-covered mountain peaks... where the sensual alpine sun casts shadows on voluptuous valleys and pleasing plateaus.

Admittedly there's not much of a narrative here, but let's face it, we don't watch this genre for clever dialog and complicated plot lines. We watch it for the awesomely implausible, slowmo golf swings... and in that department

Like Fine Wines, European Golfers Improve With Age

On the European Tour today, 46 was the optimum age for winning. ...and it applied to the ladies as well as the lads.

in Crans-sur-Sierre, Switzerland, European Tour veteran Miguel Angel Jimenez took home the OMEGA European Masters, while LET icon Laura Davies captured the UNIQUA Open in Wiener Neustadt, Austria.

Both players have the kind of distinctive style and amazing talent that make them hugely popular with fans... and both are children of the early sixties. In fact they were born just three months apart. She on October 5, 1963 and he just 5 days into 1964.
Today both were challenged by players decades their junior.

The Spanish cigar aficionado, faced a back nine charge today from Edoardo Molinari. It narrowed his lead to one stroke, but MAJ prevailed to win by three, leaving Molinari with second. Another Italian youngster, 17-year-old Matteo Manassero, finished third ...and secured his 2011 European Tour card.

In Austria meanwhile, Ms. Davies entered the final round one stroke behind fellow Brit, Melissa Reid but tenaciously took the lead and held on despite difficult conditions and stiff competition. France's Virginie Lagoutte-Clement took second. Reid finished in a tie for third with Alison Walshe of the USA.

Laura Davies and Miguel Angel Jimenez undoubtedly inspired many yesterday, and like Jack Nicklaus who won the Masters in 1986 at... yes, age 46... they demonstrated that a golfer... male or female... can remain competitive well into their fourth decade.
